Columbia resident December Harmon, who describes herself as a "human and civil rights activist who rose to prominence for her outspokenness on the Citizens Police Review Board in her hometown Columbia, MO," is running for the U.S. Senate. Following is the full text of the press release announcing her candidacy, unedited:
Columbia, MO.- December Harmon announced on Martin Luther King Jr. Day her bid for the Missouri U.S. Senate, a seat currently held by Senator Josh Hawley. Harmon says she is not running against Josh Hawley. She’s running to fight the rise of fascism in America. “I want to go fight Nazis in Congress,” Harmon says, “I’m a millennial and I feel like the Nazi uprise, Charleston, Jan 6th, the book-banning, the people-banning (trans), the history-banning (CRT), renewed state-control of women, all happened under our watch. I believe we have a responsibility to fix it.”
Harmon is a human and civil rights activist who rose to prominence for her outspokenness on the Citizens Police Review Board in her hometown Columbia, MO. “I saw corruption in our city government and in policing practices. Much of it stemmed from white supremacy. They tried to silence me and I realized fighting white supremacy and fighting the government turned out to be the same thing,” Harmon says, “It’s why I chose Martin Luther King Jr. Day, to remind everyone of the fight that is still going on. The fight for freedom from oppression.”
Besides police brutality, Harmon says she is also passionate about climate change and feels it has gone largely unaddressed. She supports the Green New Deal, codifying abortion access, gun control, banning stock trading of congressional members and automatic voter registration. “I also think we should lower the voting age to 16,” Harmon adds, “They work. They pay taxes. Why do young adults not have a say when they contribute their labor like everybody else?”
December Harmon has a B.A. in Political Science and awarded for Progress in Civic Engagement by the Missourian last December. “I’m a foul-mouth, no-nonsense radical liberal,” She jokes, “I had to work for minimum wage jobs. When I got sick, I got homeless. I’m not a millionaire. I’m down here on Earth with everybody else. I felt abandoned by the party in the name of civility. Now I’m running for all the people the Democratic establishment left behind.”
Harmon believes she would be a new kind of candidate for Missouri. She is a Christian Black lesbian asexual woman who touts the New Left socialist ideology. “I’m the liberal Fox News warned you about. They got everything right except for the hair,” Harmon says. Her hair is green, not blue.
“I’m not rich. I know this will be a David-and-Goliath battle. If we don’t come together now to fight in 2024, for the senate and the presidency, we might not get another chance.” She is asking for people to donate early to get her campaign off the ground.
