Flat Branch Pub & Brewing was Columbia’s first modern-day brewery when it opened its doors in 1994 in a refurbished 1937 brick warehouse with a curved, barrel-trussed roof that was once a Hudson car dealership. The pub gets its name from a nearby creek which was the water source for Columbia’s first settlers. On tap are a variety of award-winning, hand-crafted beers. The upscale industrial setting also is home to a full restaurant, spacious outdoor patio and large bar. The full bar also has available a selections of wines, single malt scotches and small batch bourbons. Former software developer and home brewer Tom Smith is the founder and owner. The brewers at Logboat Brewing Co. craft the beers they like to drink. Since opening in 2014, the founders have constantly tried to innovate and push themselves to brew new, unique, and interesting beers to keep things fresh and exciting. Broadway Brewery, which opened in 2009 in the heart of downtown Columbia, prides itself on being Missouri’s premier farm to table brewery. They operate under the ethos of fermentation and cultivation by producing world-class beers and engaging with local farmers and the community. Walker Claridge, one of the owners, has been growing food in Columbia since his mid-20s and is the former owner of the Root Cellar in Columbia, a locally-grown grocery store. The Bur Oak Brewing Co. was established in 2014 off of HWY 70 east of Columbia. The name pays homage to the 400-year-old Burr Oak Tree in the McBaine Bottoms near the Missouri River. The tree represents longevity and community. The brewery delivers meticulously executed yet approachable, stylistic craft beers intended to bring communities together. They craft year-round, seasonal and special release beers. Their approach is to be “authentic and simple” sticking to true, clean, nice beer that is not pretentious or complicated. The cozy tap room opens into a 15,000 square foot industrial area with picnic tables and games. Year-round offerings include Big Tree IPA, Boone County Brown, Clyde’s Caramel Cream, Lily Ale and Old 63 pilsner.
